Two New Bouncing Stories!

2008 brings not one, but two new bouncing stories! Ryerson University students in BDC 979 Radio Production are teaming up with students from the University of Bedfordshire, England, and with students from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia to produce an alternating radio drama or comedy.

The Ryerson-Bedfordshire story is set to begin Feb. 1st. The Ryerson-RMIT story is set to begin March 7th.

You'll find links to the audio episodes posted here. Students will also post feedback to each other on their audio episodes here.

Feed back for episode 6

Hey RMIT, I think the last episode:” Guilty or Not" is a great ending to wrap up the end of the bouncing story. The beginning of the story was well written, I was engaged in the first few lines. I thought it was a good start. It took a different route than I expected. The script development was on point with the previous episode as well as the other episodes. The script in corporate all the elements and details that would put the listener 'in the know' as the story ends. Sort of like a recap, with the McDonald’s line at the end tying the story at the beginning with Steve. It started off with the juror's point of view which is a great attention grabber. The mood in the court room was chaotic and I think that is the mood it is suppose to be, considering Jena's Uncle Loved Gwen. That was a twist! Tension added when Andy came into the court room as a Dingo and then turning into himself. Because of all this chaos some of the characters got lost in the scene. That part needed to be a bit clearer, it seemed clustered. I did not get the significance of the song choice in the end. However I thought the friends would be a little more remorse about Gwen's death and that Jena's uncle caused her death but I guess the lighter side of the story is better. The Humour within the story worked for parts of the story or for the flow. "Do not let the Dingo kill the prison before we get a chance" That was funny. The little bit about Ryerson was pretty funny too. That was a nice edge to add for the story. However over all the script was well developed.The production on the piece was great!The first few second into the story when the verdict was being called the cell phone SFX and the sound of it closing was great. The crowd SFX was great but at times it seemed to be over powering the action of the scene. Some of the voice at times started to overlap and made it a little unclear to hear. At first listen, I could not hear the lines properly when the Dingo came into the courtroom. I had to listen a two more times to get that part. There was a little popping Ps when the chaos stared. The SFX for the Dingo was O.K but at times it seem too loud being that it's in a court room, the barking should be a little less echoy and more absorbed, because there are people in the room absorbing sound. Again I was not sure about the song at the end and what it meant I would think that another song be placed at the end or one of those SFX that imitates an abrupt or sudden end.Overall the actors were great. The judge’s voice was distinct amongst everyone and so was the Uncle's. These two voice performances were well delivered. Over all Guilty or NOt was a good ending to the story and I enjoyed working with RMIT. Thanks guys for a great end and good partnership.

Hi Ryerson people, I've just heard the most recent episode and really enjoyed it. The story took a while to pace up, but over the past few episodes it has taken some interesting turns. I'm only sorry that there isn't the opportuntiy to further develop the plot. The final RMIT episode is due next Monday, along with the comments on episode 5. Maria was having difficulty posting her comments on the blog, so she has sent them through via me (see comments for episode one). You might also like to look at some of the individual RMIT student's blogs. A part of their assessment has been to post four entries reflecting upon the process of producing the Bouncing Story and this part of the assignment is due next week (Friday 14th). Most of your RMIT collegues have been a little coy about divulging their student blog url, but I will see if I can convince them to let you know.

The Assignment

Hi all,

For your information, here is the assignment sheet for the Bouncing Story that was given out to the Ryerson students. The requirements for the RMIT students may be slightly different, so check with Professor Bruce Berryman on that.

However, the important thing is that all groups make their deadline! Because the group that follows will only have one week to listen to the episode and write/produce the next episode, it is imperative that the episodes are completed and uploaded on time! Please note the schedule of due dates below. Thanks for your understanding on this.

BDC 979 Radio Production

Assignment: “The Bouncing Story”

The purpose of the assignment is to allow you to collaborate with overseas students on a dramatic/comedic radio story.

We’re pairing up with the students from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Ryerson will produce the first segment of a radio play, and it will be posted on our blog at http://bouncingstory.blogspot.com and available as a podcast. Then RMIT students will produce the next episode, and post it for Ryerson to hear, and so on.

Each group has only ONE WEEK to listen to the previous segment and write and produce the next segment. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that your produced segment is NOT LATE—this will throw off the entire rest of the schedule so make sure your episode is turned in on time.

Obviously, you do not need to use the same actors throughout the whole play…each character can be played by a different actor each time a segment is produced. Keep it fun and interesting by not planning with the following group what you’ll write and produce.

There are 2 components to the assignment:

The episode your group writes and produces. This will be marked by your professor and you will also get feedback from your student colleagues on it. See schedule below for due date.
Your evaluation of another group’s episode. Each individual student must provide feedback about a designated episode on the Bouncing Story blog. See schedule for designated episode and due date.

You should receive an “invitation” email from Professor Lori Beckstead to become a member of the blog. If you don’t receive an invitation (double check your junk email folder!) then send a request to lbeckste@ryerson.ca.

Guidelines for Feedback:

You should attempt to write approximately one page worth of feedback, or more if you’d like. As you write your feedback, you should try to comment on the following areas:

Writing:

Was the episode engaging? Why or why not? (consider plot, character development, setting, use of humour, clarity, etc.)
What was good about the script?
What could be improved about the script?
Did the script successfully move the story ahead without painting the next group into a corner or ignoring/dropping the threads begun by the previous group?

Production:

Was the production good? Why or why not? (consider recording, editing, mixing, microphone technique, choice and placement of sound effects, choice and placement of music, etc.)
Did it “paint a picture” for you?
What could be improved about the production?
Did you hear any production techniques that are new to you?

Actors/voice overs:

Okay, we’re not in an acting course, but feel free to comment on particularly strong performances and/or indicate how the performances could have been improved.

Ask questions:

Feel free to post questions to your colleagues about production techniques, what inspired the ideas in the episode, etc.

Please also comment on any other areas that aren’t listed here if you wish.

Restrictions:

Follow CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) guidelines regarding language, suitable content, etc.
Follow copyright restrictions regarding use of music (copyright-cleared music only, please)

What’s it worth?

In addition to invaluable experience and fun, it’s worth 15% of your mark (episode, 10% and your posted feedback, 5%).

Please note: If your episode is late, you get zero. No make-ups or re-dos. Other people are counting on you to get it done on time, not just your professor.

How to hand it in?

Hand it in to the Audio Library no later than 3 pm on the due date as a WAV file on data CD.

How to Download the Bouncing Story

Hi all,

Here's how to download the BouncingStory podcast.

1. From this page: Click Subscribe to the Bouncing Story Podcast (screen right). That will take you to the feedburner site (where the RSS feed is published from).
2. Find this address on the page: http://feeds.feedburner.com/bouncingstory and copy it. It’s the link we’ll use to subscribe to the Bouncing Story in iTunes.
3. Open iTunes.
Choose Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast > Paste the address you copied in step 2.
4. Click OK.
5. Create a Smart Playlist. This way you can hold onto old episodes when a new one is downloaded. Otherwise when iTunes updates the new episode will overwrite the old.
a. Choose File > New Smart Playlist
b. Match the following rule: Album > Contains > BouncingStory.

You'll be able to find links to each episode in MP3 format as they become available. Or, you can subscribe to the podcast so that the new episodes will automatically download to your computer when they're ready. I'll post instructions for subscribing to the podcast in a separate post.
